Program overview

The Ontario Home Energy Upgrade Financing Program connects eligible Ontario homeowners with certified specialists who identify qualifying upgrades — heating, cooling, insulation, windows, roofing, and solar — and outline financing options that may allow you to proceed with little or no upfront cost.

Most Ontario homes built before 2005 were constructed to energy codes that are now far below current standards. As these homes age, the practical result is predictable: higher energy bills, uneven comfort, and aging equipment that is increasingly costly to operate and maintain.

This is a financing program, not a government grant or rebate. Eligible homeowners are connected with certified specialists who walk through available upgrade options and the financing packages that may apply — including low monthly payment programs commonly used across Ontario.

Why older homes cost more to run

Ontario homes built before 2005 were constructed to the energy codes of their era — codes that have since been significantly tightened. In most older homes, this results in one or more of the following:

  • Heating and cooling systems operating beyond their designed lifespan
  • Insulation that has settled, degraded, or was never adequate to begin with
  • Air leakage through window frames, door seals, and attic penetrations
  • Roof and attic systems that allow heat to escape in winter and build in summer

How the home upgrade financing works

Most homeowners finance their upgrades through monthly payment programs rather than paying upfront. Your specialist will walk you through what options apply to your specific home and project scope.

  1. Check your eligibility. Answer a short set of questions about your home. Takes approximately 2–3 minutes. No commitment required.
  2. Energy specialist evaluates upgrade opportunities. A certified specialist reviews your property's current systems and identifies which upgrades qualify for financing.
  3. Receive your upgrade plan with financing options. Your specialist outlines recommended upgrades, estimated costs, and financing packages including monthly payment breakdowns.
  4. Choose your upgrades and monthly payment plan. You decide which upgrades to proceed with and select a financing structure that works for your budget. No obligation to proceed.
  5. Installation completed by certified contractors. Approved upgrades are installed by licensed Ontario contractors. All work is backed by full manufacturer warranties.

Important: This is an upgrade financing program. Homeowners do not receive cash payments or grants. Financing covers the cost of eligible upgrades — installed and warrantied — through monthly payment programs. Your specialist will explain exactly how costs and payments are structured during your consultation.

What you may qualify for

Eligible homeowners may qualify for financing on one or more upgrade pathways, depending on their property's current systems and condition. Your program specialist confirms which upgrades are available and which financing options apply during the consultation.

Flexible financing options — including low monthly payment programs — may be available for eligible homeowners, reducing or eliminating the need for upfront payment. Your specialist will outline what applies to your specific home during the consultation.

Upgrades commonly financed through this program

How the process works

The process is designed to be simple. Most homeowners complete the eligibility application in under three minutes. The consultation is a short, no-pressure phone call with a specialist who walks through your upgrade options and the financing packages that may apply.

  1. Complete the eligibility application. Answer a short set of questions about your home and ownership status. Takes approximately 2–3 minutes.
  2. Your application is reviewed. A program specialist reviews your submission to determine whether your home appears to qualify for upgrade financing.
  3. Book your consultation call. If your home meets eligibility criteria, you will be invited to book a time. Your program advisor will call you directly at your chosen time.
  4. Review your upgrade and financing options. Your advisor walks you through which upgrades are available, estimated costs, and what monthly financing may apply.
  5. You decide whether to proceed. There is no obligation at any point. If you choose to move forward, your advisor will coordinate next steps.

The program prioritizes properties where upgrade financing is likely to have the greatest impact on energy performance and homeowner comfort.
